How to Pay for College

Grants, scholarships, FAFSA, ROTC, work-study — every dollar that doesn't need to be paid back
Financial Aid FAFSA Scholarships No Surprises

The Money Map — What's Free, What's Earned, What's Borrowed

Not all college money is the same. Here's the priority order — always exhaust each tier before moving to the next:

🎁
Grants — FREE MONEY (never pay back)

Pell Grant, WA College Grant, institutional grants from the school. Based on financial need. Apply first.

🏆
Scholarships — FREE MONEY (never pay back)

Merit-based (grades, test scores), identity-based, competition-based, or specific to your major. Apply everywhere — even $500 ones.

đŸ’ŧ
Work-Study & Paid Co-ops — YOU EARN IT

Part-time campus job (work-study) or paid engineering co-op (3-5 semesters at $20-30/hr). You work for this money — but it doesn't come with interest.

đŸĻ
Federal Loans — LOW INTEREST, FLEXIBLE

Direct Subsidized (government pays interest while in school) and Direct Unsubsidized. Fixed rates, income-based repayment options. Borrow only what you need.

âš ī¸
Private Loans — LAST RESORT

Higher interest, fewer protections, no income-based repayment. Avoid if possible. If you must use them, exhaust federal loans first and shop multiple lenders.

FAFSA — The One Form That Unlocks Everything

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the single most important form in college financing. It determines your eligibility for Pell Grants, federal loans, work-study, and most state and institutional aid. Everything flows through it.

FAFSA opens December 1, 2026 for the 2027-28 school year. File as close to December 1 as possible — some aid is first-come, first-served. The Washington state deadline is typically in February, but individual schools may have earlier priority deadlines.

  • What you need: Your Social Security number, your parents' tax returns (from 2025 for the 2027-28 FAFSA), bank account balances, and a list of schools you're applying to.
  • What happens next: You get a Student Aid Report (SAR) with your SAI — Student Aid Index. This is a number that helps schools calculate your aid. Lower number = more aid. Don't panic at the number — it's a starting point, not a final cost.
  • Parent contribution: The FAFSA expects parents to contribute. But — and this matters — the formula doesn't know your actual situation. If your family's circumstances are unusual, talk to the financial aid office directly. They can adjust.

Critical tip: File the FAFSA even if you think your family makes too much. Many scholarships require a FAFSA on file, and you might be surprised what you qualify for. There is no income cutoff for federal loans, and some institutional aid uses FAFSA data regardless of need.

Federal Grants — Free Money From the Government

GrantMax Amount (2026-27)Who QualifiesDetails
Pell Grant $7,395/year Undergraduates with financial need The foundation of federal aid. Amount depends on your SAI, enrollment status (full-time gets more), and cost of attendance. You can receive it for up to 12 semesters.
FSEOG Up to $4,000/year Pell-eligible students with the lowest SAI Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. Administered by the school — funds are limited. Another reason to file the FAFSA early.
TEACH Grant Up to $4,000/year Students planning to teach in high-need fields Requires teaching commitment in a low-income school for 4 years within 8 years of graduating. If not fulfilled, converts to a loan. Only relevant if education is your path.

Washington State Grants — You Live Here, Use This

đŸ”ī¸
Washington College Grant (WA Grant)

Income-based state grant that can cover full tuition at public universities. For a family of four making under $78,500, it covers a significant portion. Under $61,000 — full tuition at UW or WSU rates. Even families making up to $120,000 may qualify for partial grants. This is one of the most generous state grant programs in the country. File the FAFSA to be considered.

📜
College Bound Scholarship

If you signed up in 7th or 8th grade and meet income requirements, this covers tuition, fees, and a small book stipend at public Washington colleges. Combined with the WA College Grant, this can make in-state tuition $0. Even if you're going out-of-state, having this as a Washington backup is valuable.

Note: While the WA Grant and College Bound are designed for Washington public universities, the FAFSA data they use still counts toward your overall aid package at Purdue or CU Boulder. File it either way.

Purdue-Specific Aid

ProgramAwardCriteria
Presidential ScholarshipUp to full tuition + study abroad stipendTop academic achievement. Competitive — requires separate application. Deadline typically November 1.
Trustee Scholarship$10,000-$16,000/yearStrong academics, leadership, extracurriculars. Automatic consideration with early application.
Marquis Scholarship$4,000-$16,000/yearUnderrepresented students in STEM. Requires nomination or self-identification on application.
Engineering ScholarshipsVaries ($1,000-$10,000)School-level awards for engineering majors. Some are automatic, some require application. Check after admission.

Purdue tuition freeze: Purdue has not raised in-state or out-of-state tuition since 2012-13. The price you see today is the price you'll pay in year four. This is almost unheard of in higher education and makes Purdue's out-of-state cost more predictable than most.

CU Boulder-Specific Aid

ProgramAwardCriteria
Chancellor's Achievement ScholarshipUp to $15,000/yearMerit-based. GPA and test scores (if submitted). Automatic consideration with early application.
CU Esteemed Scholars$2,500-$6,250/yearAutomatic based on GPA + SAT/ACT. Multiple tiers — you'll be notified if you qualify.
Engineering ScholarshipsVariesCollege of Engineering awards. Apply through CU's scholarship portal after admission.
Non-Resident Merit Scholarships$5,000-$12,500/yearSpecifically for out-of-state students. Reduces the non-resident tuition gap.

WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange): CU Boulder participates in WUE for some programs. WA residents may qualify for tuition at 150% of in-state rate (roughly a 33% discount on out-of-state). Check whether aerospace engineering is included — program availability changes year to year. Search "WUE CU Boulder" for current info →

Aerospace & STEM Scholarships

🚀
AIAA Undergraduate Scholarships

$500-$10,000. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awards multiple scholarships to students pursuing aerospace. Apply in the fall of senior year.

đŸ—ī¸
SAME Scholarships

Society of American Military Engineers. Multiple awards for students in engineering, including aerospace. Some are specific to Washington state posts.

đŸ›Šī¸
Boeing Scholarships & Internships

Boeing invests heavily in Washington students. Their high school internship program is paid, and several Boeing-funded scholarships exist through partner organizations like the WA State Opportunity Scholarship.

🔭
NASA STEM Engagement

NASA internships are paid (~$15-18/hr for high school, more for undergrads) and come with mentorship from working scientists and engineers. Their scholarship portal also lists external opportunities.

🏆
TARC Scholarships

The Team America Rocketry Challenge awards $100,000+ in scholarships annually to top finishers. If you compete in TARC, the scholarship opportunities are built in.

🔷
Blue Origin Internships

Paid summer internships for college students, but their high school outreach programs can lead to scholarship opportunities. Based in Kent — you could intern without leaving the Seattle area.

ROTC — Full Ride With a Service Commitment

Both Purdue and CU Boulder have strong ROTC programs. The scholarship covers full tuition, fees, a book stipend ($1,200/year), and a monthly living allowance ($300-500/month depending on year). In exchange, you serve as an officer for 4 years after graduation.

Navy ROTCFull tuition + fees + books + monthly stipend4-5 years active duty as a naval officerNROTC →
Space ForceThrough AFROTC — same benefits4 years active duty in Space ForceSpace Force →

The honest truth about ROTC: It's not just a scholarship — it's a career path. You're committing to military service as an officer. The benefits are real (zero debt, leadership experience, security clearance, veteran hiring preference), but so is the commitment. Talk to current ROTC cadets, not just recruiters. Ask: what does a typical day look like? What happens if you change your mind about aerospace two years in? The answer to the second question is that you still serve — the scholarship converts to a loan if you leave the program.

Work-Study & Paid Undergraduate Research

đŸ’ģ
Federal Work-Study

Part-time job — usually 10-15 hours/week — on campus. Library, lab assistant, tutoring center, admin. The money you earn doesn't count against next year's FAFSA. Most schools have more work-study jobs than students to fill them.

đŸ”Ŧ
LASP — Paid Undergrad Research at CU Boulder

LASP employs over 100 undergraduates. You work on real NASA flight hardware, satellite operations, and mission data. Paid. On campus. This is not a hypothetical — students put this on their resumes and walk into jobs at Lockheed Martin, NASA, and SpaceX.

🏭
Purdue Co-Op Program

3-5 semesters of full-time paid engineering work during college. Students typically earn $20-30/hour at companies like Boeing, Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation, and SpaceX. Total earnings over the co-op: $40,000-$60,000. You graduate with a year of industry experience, a professional network, and significantly less debt. The trade-off: it usually adds a semester to your degree timeline.

Real Numbers — Example Scenarios

Scenario A: Family income $55,000 — 4-person household — one child in college

Purdue (out-of-state)CU Boulder (out-of-state)
Sticker: $42,000
Pell Grant: -$7,395
Purdue Trustee: -$14,000
WA College Grant: -$5,000
Federal loan: -$5,500
Work-study: -$3,000
Real cost to family: ~$7,105/year
Sticker: $40,000
Pell Grant: -$7,395
CU Chancellor's: -$12,500
WA College Grant: -$5,000
Federal loan: -$5,500
Work-study: -$3,000
Real cost to family: ~$6,605/year

These are realistic estimates — not guarantees. Run each school's Net Price Calculator for your actual numbers. The federal loan here is the Direct Subsidized maximum for first-year students and must be repaid.

Scenario B: Family income $90,000 — 4-person household — one child in college

Purdue (out-of-state)CU Boulder (out-of-state)
Sticker: $42,000
Pell Grant: partial (~$2,000)
Purdue Presidential: -$20,000
Federal loan: -$5,500
Real out-of-pocket: ~$14,500/year
Sticker: $40,000
Pell Grant: partial (~$2,000)
CU Chancellor's: -$15,000
Federal loan: -$5,500
Real out-of-pocket: ~$17,500/year

At this income level, merit scholarships make the difference. The Presidential is competitive — grades and test scores matter. Even a partial Pell Grant unlocks other aid programs.

Scenario C: Full ROTC Scholarship — Any income level

Purdue with AFROTC Type 1CU Boulder with AFROTC Type 1
Sticker: $42,000
AFROTC: -$42,000 (tuition+fees)
Monthly stipend: +$3,600/year
Book stipend: +$1,200/year
Real cost to family: $0
(Student earns ~$4,800/year)
Sticker: $40,000
AFROTC: -$40,000 (tuition+fees)
Monthly stipend: +$3,600/year
Book stipend: +$1,200/year
Real cost to family: $0
(Student earns ~$4,800/year)

The Type 1 scholarship is competitive — apply early in senior year. The commitment is 4 years active duty as an officer. If aerospace is your goal, Space Force commissioned through AFROTC is the most direct path.

The Loan Warning — How Much Is Too Much?

A reasonable rule: Don't borrow more than your expected first-year salary. If aerospace engineers start at $80,000, your total loan balance at graduation should be under $80,000. Less is better — that payment follows you for 10-25 years.

Total BorrowedMonthly Payment (10-year)Monthly Payment (25-year)Total Interest Paid
$20,000$200$115~$4,000-$14,000
$40,000$400$230~$8,000-$29,000
$60,000$600$345~$12,000-$43,000
$80,000$800$460~$16,000-$58,000
$120,000+$1,200+$690+$24,000-$87,000+

Red flags: If you're looking at more than $80,000 in loans, seriously consider: (1) a year at community college first, (2) in-state options like UW, (3) the ROTC path, or (4) the A&P mechanic route with zero student debt and a $60K starting salary. Prestige isn't worth a lifetime of payments. The best aerospace program is the one you graduate from without being crushed by debt.

Junior Year Money Checklist

  1. Now — Run both schools' Net Price Calculators: Purdue and CU Boulder. The results are estimates, not commitments, but they'll tell you if a school is actually affordable before you spend months on applications.
  2. Now — Talk to your parents about what they can contribute. Not the vague "we'll figure it out" — actual numbers. The FAFSA will ask anyway. Better to have this conversation in October than April.
  3. Summer before senior year — Research scholarships. Create a spreadsheet. AIAA, SAME, local community foundations, your parents' employers. Every $500 scholarship is real money. Nobody else will do this for you.
  4. October senior year — Complete the FAFSA the week it opens. Set a calendar reminder for December 1, 2026. Being early matters for FSEOG, work-study, and some state grants.
  5. October senior year — Apply for Purdue and CU Boulder by their early action deadlines (usually November 1). Early applicants get priority scholarship consideration.
  6. November-December — Apply for AFROTC scholarship if interested. The board meets in rounds — earlier applications have more slots available.
  7. January-March — Review financial aid award letters. Compare them line by line. Call the financial aid office if something doesn't make sense. You can appeal — especially if your family's circumstances changed since the FAFSA was filed.

"Don't let the sticker price stop you from applying. The $42,000 number on Purdue's website is what almost nobody actually pays. Between Pell, state grants, institutional aid, and a campus job, the real number is often half that or less. Apply first. Figure out the money second. A Net Price Calculator takes 10 minutes and tells you more than three hours of Googling. And if the numbers still don't work — that's not failure. That's information. There's more than one road into aerospace."
